Cape Charles was built in 1884 as a railroad terminus — the last stop on the Eastern Shore before freight and passengers crossed the Chesapeake by ferry to Norfolk. The Victorian streetscape survived intact, and the bay beach here faces west, which means the sun sets directly over the water. There are not many places on the East Coast where that happens.
